Each year, in their winter holidays, a group of boys from Rondebosch Boys High School, along with parents and teachers, make the long trek from Cape Town to Trennerys on the Transkei Wild Coast. This serves as their base for ten days while they work along side the learners from Isolomzi Senior Secondary School helping them to prepare for their matric exams in subjects such as maths and accountancy. Isolomzi serves a deep rural community located in one of the poorest performing districts in the Eastern Cape. While it is clear that Isolomzi is under-resourced, what is not clear is which, of the two groups of school kids, gains the most out of this annual encounter.
Caltex Eastern Cape is the proud fuel sponsor for this venture. We believe that initiatives of this nature demonstrate the very best of what South Africa, and the Eastern Cape, is capable of achieving by working together for a common goal to improve our nation and the lives of the people who live in it.
In 2016 the matrics of Isolomzi achieved a 97% pass rate including 20 distinctions in subjects including Life Science, Accounting, Physical Science and Mathematics.
